History

Our department was founded by Prof. Dr. Necdet TÜKEL in 1983 as the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, with the expansion of the Chair of Materials in Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 1992, during the reconstruction after obtaining technical university status, our departmant was moved under the roof of Faculty of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. Same year evening education was commenced and this program continued until 2014. In addition to the Turkish education (30% English education), our department has started 100% English education with the "Metallurgical and Materials Engineering" program since 2014.

Our department provides education and training in the production and processing of metallic, ceramic, polymeric and composite materials.

The Department consists of  two chairs, "Materials Science and Engineering" and "Extractive Metallurgy". In addition to bachelor's degree, our department offers M.Sc. degrees in Materials Engineering and Extractive Metallurgy branches and Ph.D. degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.

In order to reach the vision of the department, after 1-year English preparatory education Metallurgical and Materials Engineering students receive education and training with course contents consisting of Basic Sciences, Basic Engineering, Vocational Courses and Social and Human Sciences Courses. In addition to this education and training, compulsory practical studies (internship) are carried out.
